Oppenheim Architecture+Design won a recent design competition for a vacant site in our neighborhood by the Williamsburg Bridge. The designers wanted the 440-foot-tall tower to "deliver grace and drama through powerful manipulations of scale, proportion, and materiality." However, there is still much controversy over the large scale developments along the Williamsburg waterfront and many people feel the enormity of scale is an oppressive gesture to the surrounding neighborhood. It will be interesting if this project ever moves from the "competition" realm and onto the planning department's docket.
